Resident Echoes: Making a collective space

Project

Mostyn is pleased to announce a new collaborative commission with Sheffield based social architecture practice Studio Polpo. 

Influenced through a public programme working with local residents and workers connected to Mostyn through social enterprises, community centres, and mental health services in our area, the new commission will enhance the Project Space as a public resource, incorporating new furniture design, interior architecture and sound.

Responding to the question, ‘How can Mostyn create a space where our communities can feel at home?’, the forthcoming programme will produce workshops, walks, communal gatherings and a short residency with Conwy based sound artists Graham Hembrough and Carl Richardson. 

Working in collaboration with Mostyn’s urban surroundings, the project will develop the Project Space into a creative resource for neighbouring communities and a site for future artistic collaborations, offering an exciting and alternative space to critically engage with contemporary art and connect Mostyn to its social surroundings.

Resident Echoes: Collective Voices Residency: 24 – 26 November 2022

How do our neighbouring communities feel about the area they live in? What are the places that local residents feel connected to around Llandudno? How can Mostyn create a space where communities can feel at home in the gallery? 

In response to these questions, Mostyn presents Resident Echoes, a new collaborative project with Sheffield based social architecture practice Studio Polpo and Conwy based sound artists Graham Hembrough and Carl Richardson. 

Over three days the artists will take up residence in locations across Llandudno and within the gallery to meet with communities and the wider public. Through these recorded gatherings, the artists will produce new sound works which will present a portrait of the town through the collective voices in these public spaces. 

These new works will be presented in the Mostyn Project Space in 2023, both online and within the newly transformed Mostyn Project Space, a place where our communities and the wider public can come together and encounter our programmes in alternative and new ways.

Thursday, 24 November 2022 – Ty Llywelyn Community Centre: Round table
Ty Llywelyn Community Centre is an exciting and welcoming community centre in the heart of the Tre Cwm estate in Llandudno. Run by a dedicated team of workers and volunteers, its facilities offer a huge number of classes and activities, from sports and exercise to workshops, music and children’s groups.

This session welcomes the people of the Tre Cwm Estate and those connected to the centre to join a recorded roundtable conversation facilitated by Mostyn and Studio Polpo, to share their stories and the history of the centre and the people who make it. 

Friday, 25 November 2022 – Llandudno Town Centre: Walk and Talk
Inspired by the approach of ConwyMIND, an independent charity to support better mental health and wellbeing to people across Conwy County, this Walk and Talk is an invitation to explore the town and share memories of places that have special meaning to local residents. The Walk and Talk will record the journey, through the conversations, the movements and the sound of the elements that surround us on the way.

Participants in this event are invited to propose locations in the town centre they would like to share in advance. Please be aware that this event involves walking outdoors and we advise you to wear waterproof and warm clothing and footwear. The route of this Walk and Talk will be shared with ticket holders on the 22 November ahead of the event.

Saturday, 26 November 2022 – Mostyn Project Space: Open Session
Join Studio Polpo, Carl Richardson and Graham Hembrough in the Project Space for a day of tours, activities and a collaborative recording session. The experience in Mostyn is not just the international contemporary art we present in the galleries. The public use our spaces for different reasons and in various ways. You may be a regular customer in the Oriel Cafe or the Gallery Siop, you might only use the free facilities when going about your daily errands. 

This event is open to everyone and you don’t have to be an art expert to take part. The recorded session aims to reflect this, and pose the question to the public, how can the Project Space help people feel more at home in the gallery.

Drop-in anytime between 12pm-4pm, Saturday the 26 of November.
