Mostyn announce new Director

Today Mostyn, in Llandudno, Wales can announce their new Director, who will take up the post in early 2026.  Adam Lewis-Smythe will join Mostyn from Bluecoat in Liverpool.

“I’m delighted to join Mostyn to help lead a gallery that has meant so much to me personally. I’ve loved visiting Mostyn over the years; its ambitious programme, thoughtful exhibitions and commitment to artists have all played a significant role in shaping my appreciation of art and culture. I will work hard to continue its legacy of presenting world-class art and ensuring that the conversations it sparks remain relevant to people’s lives across Llandudno, Wales and beyond.

Mostyn is a vital asset for artists in Wales, a place where they can create, take risks and see their work in dialogue with art by international artists. Over the past decade I have been driven to help artists find new ways to create meaningful connections with audiences. I look forward to continuing this work at Mostyn.” said Adam Lewis Smythe.

Jeremy Salisbury, Chair of Mostyn’s Board of Trustees said,  “As a Board, we have gone through a rigorous process in selecting our new Director. We are delighted that Adam is joining us from Bluecoat, where we know he was very highly regarded. We believe that he will bring with him vision and creativity and will be a very significant addition to our wonderful team at Mostyn.  Our excitement in appointing Adam is tinged with a great sadness for the departure of Clare Harding, who has been a wonderful Interim Director for us, having stepped into the role following the departure of Alfredo Cramerotti two years ago. Clare has provided us with stability and certainty and has helped to develop our people in a very positive way. We are all very sad to see her go and we wish her all the very best in her new role. She leaves with our deep thanks and appreciation”.

Since 2015 Adam Lewis-Smythe has worked at Bluecoat, Liverpool, in roles of Curator, Interim Head of Programme and Senior Curator. Highlights have included permanent commissions in the building by Harold Offeh, Babak Ganjei and Sumuyya Khader as part of a capital development in 2020, and curating exhibitions with artists such as Paddy Gould & Roxy Topia (2024), Dahong Hongxuan Wang (2024), Michelle Williams Gamaker (2024), Alevtina Kakhidze (2023), Grace Ndiritu (2019), and Jade de Montserrat (2018). Prior to Bluecoat, Lewis-Smythe co-founded and co-directed The Lombard Method, an artist-led space in Birmingham. Publications have included The ark: Center for Interdisciplinary Experimentation, Grace Ndiritu (ed A. Smythe 2019) and The Standard Model (ed N. Aarle L.Lopez, A. Smythe 2015).
