MOSTYN X CARN RESIDENCY CALL OUT

CARN is very excited to announce a residency opportunity in collaboration with Mostyn as part of a UK wide project by artist Jeremy Deller.

The Triumph of Art is a UK wide commission by the National Gallery London  marking the role art plays in our public collections, cultural spaces and museums. Deller has drawn inspiration from Titian’s wild processions of Roman gods, as well as folklore, dances, plays, fly-posters, banners, rave culture and popular arts.

CARN embodies much of the grassroots creativity that is a focus of The Triumph of Art, and North West Wales has a rich history of grassroots movements and creative response to the status quo. From castle takeovers, to quarry strikes, to free parties in the 90s, all embodying the unique cultural and linguistic character of the area.

Artists working across mediums based in Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy  (either solo or in collaboration) are invited to propose a residency and creative enquiry based on themes that relate to commemoration, celebration, demonstration and transformation, broadly defined.  The proposal can be of specific interest to your practice or of relevance to your community, landscape or cultural heritage. It could also include engagement with archive and cultural collections. This residency is intended to support artistic inquiry and process-driven research, offering time, space, and resources for artists to develop new ideas and collaborations without the pressure of a predetermined outcome.

CARN and Mostyn will offer support for any related public engagement activity, curatorial guidance, production advice and introduction to useful contacts where required. Artists will have access to RISO printing facilities at Mostyn and public-facing spaces at Oriel CARN and Mostyn.

The artist(s) will be selected by a panel from CARN and Mostyn. The successful applicants will be informed by the 5th of April, with the residency taking place between April – July 2025.  The residency is intended to be flexible in recognition that artists will have other commitments alongside their practice. The rhythm and timeline of the residency will be agreed through dialog between CARN and Mostyn and the selected artist(s).
