MOSTYN, in partnership with LUX, would like to commission a new digital moving image artwork by a Wales based visual artist / filmmaker.
Visual artists and makers, working either solo or in collaboration, are invited to submit a proposal for a moving image work that responds to the Wales national contemporary collection. You can explore the collection through Celf ar y Cyd, a new online resource that is being developed and populated as part of a National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales.
We ask that your proposal is stimulated by either an artwork, artist or theme represented in the collection. This could be of specific interest to your practice or of relevance to your community, your landscape or your cultural heritage.
This commission aims to build awareness of artists’ moving image work within the context of the National Contemporary Art Gallery for Wales, and to stimulate dialogue about the ways the collection can benefit artists and communities in Wales.
The commission will be showcased on the MOSTYN website, along with a gallery screening launch, and accompanied by a public engagement event to be agreed with the selected artist.
Please note any potential use or reproduction of (or elements of) works in the collection will need to be copyright cleared with the artist or their estate. Mostyn will support the commissioned artists with this, as well as offer in-kind curatorial and production support.

- A letter (max 500 words) or 4 minute max audio or video recording outlining the approach and interest in the opportunity
- Links to 2 examples of previous recent work (max 15 min duration for moving image work in total)
- A short artist statement, biography or CV for each practitioner included in your proposal (1 page max)

Please note that the rights of the work will remain with the selected artist(s) and will not be part of the National Contemporary Art Gallery of Wales collection.
Budget
Total commissioning budget: £6.500 inclusive of all costs and of VAT.
The fee will include artist fee, and production costs, to be discussed with commissioned artist(s).
MOSTYN and LUX will offer support for engagement activity, production advice, curatorial guidance and useful contacts where needed.

MOSTYN is a free, public gallery in Llandudno, Wales, that presents a programme of outstanding international contemporary art within its galleries and online. This programme has recently included solo exhibitions by Cerith Wyn-Evans, Jacqueline de Jong, Nick Hornby, Chiara Camoni, Anj Smith, Nobuko Tsuchiya, Derek Boshier, Louisa Gagliardi and Shezad Dawood. Mostyn offers a public engagement programme including talks, tours and workshops, and supports over 400 artists through their onsite and online shop. Mostyn receives support from the Arts Council of Wales and is part of Plus TATE, the UK-wide contemporary visual art network
LUX is an arts organisation and museum for the support and promotion of visual artists working with the moving image. Founded as a charity in 2002 it builds on the work of its predecessor organisations the London Filmmakers Co-operative, London Video Arts and the Lux Centre and a history which stretches back to the 1960s. LUX offers a rolling programme of exhibitions, screenings, workshops, courses and talks as well as a reference library and mediatheque. LUX also represents the UK’s only significant collection of moving image works produced by visual artists dating from the 1920s to the present day, consisting of over 6000 works by more than 1500 artists.
The National Contemporary Art Gallery Wales initiative is being developed as a partnership model by Amgueddfa Cymru, National Library of Wales, the Arts Council of Wales, Oriel Myrddin in Carmarthen, Aberystwyth Arts Centre Gallery, Oriel Davies in Newtown, Storiel in Bangor, Plas Glyn y Weddw in Llanbedrog, Ruthin Craft Centre, Mostyn in Llandudno, Newport Museum and Art Gallery and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea. The initiative is funded by the Welsh Government. One of the key aims of the initiative is to establish a network of partners through which artworks from the national collection can be more widely accessed and enjoyed.
